{"id":8600,"date":"2025-10-23T15:13:48","date_gmt":"2025-10-23T14:13:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thetrainingrock.com\/?p=8600"},"modified":"2025-10-23T15:13:48","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T14:13:48","slug":"company-values-are-a-waste-of-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thetrainingrock.com\/dev\/company-values-are-a-waste-of-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Company values are a waste of time&#8230;."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thetrainingrock.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Company-values-300x300.png\" alt=\"Company values\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8601\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thetrainingrock.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Company-values-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/thetrainingrock.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Company-values-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/thetrainingrock.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Company-values-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/thetrainingrock.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Company-values-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/thetrainingrock.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Company-values.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>&#8230;until you realise the mess you\u2019re in is exactly because you\u2019re not using them.<\/p>\n<p>If I had a pound for every time someone\u2019s rolled their eyes at the mention of company values, I\u2019d be running leadership retreats in the Maldives by now.<\/p>\n<p>You can almost feel the collective eye roll when you mention values in a workplace.<\/p>\n<p>Fluffy.<br \/>\nPointless.<br \/>\nA tick-box exercise to keep facilitators in work.<\/p>\n<p>After working with a gazillion* leaders, here\u2019s the pattern that\u2019s impossible to ignore:<br \/>\n*at the last count<\/p>\n<p>&#x2705; Organisations who take the time to define values that actually reflect the culture they want, not some corporate bingo buzzwords, and then anchor those values to clear, observable behaviours, have higher retention, happier teams, and people whose personal growth fuels the company\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Because \u201cRespect\u201d, \u201cHonesty\u201d, and \u201cKindness\u201d sound lovely, but unless everyone knows what those look like in action &#8211;  what\u2019s in and what\u2019s out &#8211; they\u2019re just wallpaper.<\/p>\n<p>&#x274c; The ones who say, \u201cWe don\u2019t have time for that right now\u201d are often the same ones dealing with behavioural issues, poor conduct, low trust, and leaders without the tools to manage performance.<\/p>\n<p>Time for a truth bomb: one of the main reasons it\u2019s \u201cnot the right time\u201d is because everyone\u2019s too busy dealing with that one person. You know, the one whose numbers are brilliant but whose attitude is wreaking havoc across the organisation.<br \/>\nAhem, if you had clear values in place, managing that person would be so much easier. You\u2019d have the tools, and they\u2019d have zero confusion about what\u2019s acceptable and what\u2019s not.<\/p>\n<p>Because here\u2019s the reality: you can\u2019t build a high-performing culture without knowing what will and won\u2019t be tolerated.<\/p>\n<p>And before you say, \u201cThat\u2019s HR\u2019s job,\u201d it\u2019s not.<\/p>\n<p>Culture isn\u2019t created in HR.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s created in every conversation between leaders, peers, teams, and the people around them.<\/p>\n<p>How people respond to challenge is culture.<br \/>\nHow comfortable they feel disagreeing with the boss is culture.<br \/>\nHow performance is managed, how feedback is given, how mistakes are owned &#8211; that\u2019s all culture.<\/p>\n<p>So when people tell me \u201cvalues aren\u2019t a priority right now,\u201d I can\u2019t help but feel the pain of all the people in those teams who are operating in a free-for-all environment.<\/p>\n<p>Because nine times out of ten, the reasons they\u2019re firefighting would vanish if they\u2019d defined what behaviour was and wasn\u2019t acceptable in the first place, and equipped people to uphold it.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s like saying you\u2019re too busy bailing water to fix the hole in the boat.<\/p>\n<p>You could keep scooping, but wouldn\u2019t it make more sense to patch the leak?<\/p>\n<p>Defining values isn\u2019t the fluffy stuff.
