We\u2019ve just moved house.<\/p>\n
Which means we\u2019ve spent months in and out of conversations with estate agents.
\nLots of them.<\/p>\n
And here\u2019s what surprised absolutely no one.<\/p>\n
Most of them struggled to be honest.
\nI know, shocking, eh? 😉<\/p>\n
I have a very effective inbuilt bullsh*t detector and tolerating being lied to really isn\u2019t my fort\u00e9.<\/p>\n
Not in leadership.
\nNot in business.
\nNot when you\u2019re standing in my living room telling me that you can absolutely sell my house for the best price by this time tomorrow and yes, of course, you operate differently from all the other estate agents in this area\u2026 bla bla bla.<\/p>\n
Agent after agent came in selling themselves. Their services, their stats, their shiny promises, their websites full of words like honest, human and client-first.<\/p>\n
It was all me, me, me, as if they\u2019d pressed play and I got their spiel.<\/p>\n
So the relationships were short. Very short.<\/p>\n
My trust levels were so low we even told agents we\u2019d put cameras up for viewings.
\nThey still lied. #ImpressiveInAllTheWrongWays<\/p>\n
One agent invented a viewing. A fictional human. True story.
\nYou know the drill: house spotless, windows and mirrors cleaned, hob gleaming.
\nOnly to discover there\u2019d been no viewing at all.<\/p>\n
Would you tolerate that?<\/p>\n
And then one agent, Harry, did something radically different.<\/p>\n
He asked about us.
\nWhy we were moving.
\nWhat our situation was.
\nWhat mattered.
\nWhat we were looking for.
\nWhat we wanted from an agent.<\/p>\n
He didn\u2019t perform.

Clearing out a house after 28 years is emotionally exhausting. You\u2019re making hundreds of decisions, reliving memories, and running on reduced bandwidth before the day even starts.<\/p>\n
So the last thing you need is someone adding friction, wasting your time, or inflating their ego instead of understanding your situation.<\/p>\n
And this is where leadership really shows up.<\/p>\n
Not just in meetings, strategy days or performance conversations, but in unexpected, ordinary, human moments like this.<\/p>\n
Your team members are always carrying more than you can see.<\/p>\n
Stuff at home, stuff in their heads, things quietly draining their capacity before they even show up to work.<\/p>\n
In those moments, they don\u2019t need spin, a performance, or your ego.<\/p>\n
They need you on their side.<\/p>\n
Because when leaders put relationships first, results follow.<\/p>\n
Every single time.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s leadership.
\nAnd it shows up everywhere.<\/p>\n
Sometimes, it looks a lot like Harry turning up, getting curious, and putting the human first.<\/p>\n
If you want better results, start where Harry did: with the person in front of you, not the outcome you\u2019re trying to impress.<\/p>\n
