Towels or plants?

Do you think of your team members as towels or plants?
Before you think I’ve really lost the plot let me explain…
I think it’s fair to say that the 80’s style ‘boss’ approach to being a leader, was to get as much out of each employee as possible; get their money’s worth out of every person every day and focus on the bottom line. You know, productivity = output = money.
Much like wringing out a towel and getting every last drop that you can.
In the short-term, you might get more out of them; one extra sale, 5% more productivity, a project completed a day early.
And what’s the human impact? Being micromanaged and squeezed for every last drop feels suffocating. Not sustainable for the long term, so on the horizon will either be burnout or resignation (or both).
It’s also exhausting and frustrating to lead like this.
Thankfully, there’s a shift away from that ego-driven style of leadership, towards a more trust-based approach; enabling employees to thrive, growing their confidence/skills/career AND achieving and exceeding goals. And although this way of leading takes training and practise, it’s easier, more comfortable (for both parties) and much, much more profitable in the long term.
Why? Because staff have space to breathe, trust their leader, feel safe to try new things and make mistakes and will learn.
When the culture is such that it’s safe to put you hand up and say “I need help”, when trust is high, when respect is established, THAT’s when people thrive and loyalty is cemented.
And that’s where the plant comes in. We don’t stand over a plant and shout at it to grow.
We provide rich soil (culture), give them time and space (trust) and feed them (training) to help them grow.
We don’t dig up the roots on day 2 to see why they haven’t grown. When we come back a week later, we see growth. We keep an eye (listening) and continue feeding them when necessary (training).
A month later, when the leaves are huge and there are new buds sprouting, how magic does that feel?
Plants grow, towels get nicked….!
So if you want to grow your team and not end up back on the recruitment wheel to replace the people you squeezed dry, grow plants, don’t wring towels!
Unless you’ve been living on Mars recently, then you’ll have heard of The Great Resignation.
This is probably the question I get asked the most often (after ‘can you hear me, am I on mute?’)
